Little Links for the Weekend

Like some of my favorite fellow bloggers, I'm going to try and give you a hint at the thousands of pages I come across a week and share my favorite oddities and special things with you. Enjoy!

For word lovers - 20 words you didn't know were inspired by actual people. #wordnerdalert!

Keeping with the theme, Geek Week at Housing Works Bookshop on Crosby has some really interesting events, including the Literary Spelling Bee on March 4th.

I love this classic elephant bowl cutie from my friend Sue at The Zhush. More elephant goodness at my Elephants Pinterest board!

Learn how to properly address envelopes from Rue Magazine.

Loving this Bombshell Pro font...maybe it's because I picked Smash back up again?

IS.IT.SPRING.YET? I want to wear this lace Dolce Vita dress everywhere.

There is a restaurant named Paulie Gee's and our boys at Immaculate Infatuation love it. Score all around.

And for anyone who needs a smile - this cheerful interpretation of Windows of New York will do that for you.

Happy Weekend, y'all!

Introducing Bonfaire

In the vein of #mysmartercommerce (maybe for us it's #mysmartershopping!), I wanted to introduce you to Bonfaire, a fabulous way to shop for coveted handbags, shoes, jewelry, and more - all before everyone else gets their hands on it. Which, in essence, is another way to shop smart! If there's something you really want, you should be able to get it made to order and before everyone else. It's also a smarter way to sell for designers - forget the traditional way that has budget constraints associated with inventory amounts!

Bonfaire helps designers take more risks, and in turn gives you more of kinds of product you want. From favorites like Elizabeth Cole and Missoni all the way to brands like Mysuelly and Vic, they've got a great assortment of luxury accessories.

Check out a few of my favorites currently on the site - but act fast, as designers come and go!

MySuelly, $625

Elizabeth Cole Bacall Earrings, $265

CC Skye Deco Bracelet, $245

Dee Keller Lace Up Bootie, $455

Spotlight On: Keaton Row! The Future of Personal Styling

Keeping with the #mysmartercommerce theme, I wanted to introduce you to a great new venture (disclosure - I'm part of it and you can be, too!). Presenting the Future of Personal Styling - Keaton Row. You may have noticed the Keaton Row button on my sidebar as well as a Keaton Row link in all my social media tags - I'm officially unveiling Keaton Row and how you can get involved! I had Katie, their Style Editor, sit down with me to give an in-depth access to what Keaton Row is all about.

How was KR started?
Founded in 2011, Keaton Row is the first online person-to-person sales channel pairing the time-starved woman with a personal Stylist she knows and trusts. Keaton Row Stylists represent a new generation of the Avon lady utilizing social media to sell within their networks and conducting 100% of their business online. With a name referencing London’s Savile Row, known for its tradition of exquisite tailoring, Keaton Row offers curated styles from hundreds of brands to match the individual tastes of our diverse clientele.

FOUNDERS CHERYL HAN & ELENOR MAK- As already good friends and then students at Harvard Business School, Cheryl and Elenor shared a love of fashion and style. They enjoyed assembling unique outfits for themselves and their friends, and quickly realized the market for smart, successful women in dire need of help with piecing together clothes for both their professional and personal lives. Later on, after Cheryl had put in her time launching and managing e-commerce sites at big-time beauty companies like L’Oreal and Clarins USA, and Elenor had logged four years as a National Sales Director at Avon, the two came together to combine their business brains with their personal passion for styling. To keep with the times, the pair wanted to build a company that leveraged technology to democratize fashion, making the convenience and attention of the Personal Stylist a luxury afforded to every woman—and out of this venture, Keaton Row was born.

How did you get involved?
I like to think it was fate :) I was unhappy with my current job and introduced to Keaton Row by a Stylist/Colleague that I worked with at J.Crew. The second I met Cheryl and Elenor and learned more about their vision, I was instantly inspired, hooked and excited. I started freelancing with them as a Stylist and was doing everything I could to help! After months of working with clients, other stylists and getting KR up and running, I left J.Crew and became the Keaton Row Style Editor! I am mainly working on Merchandising, Stylist recruiting and being the overall fashion voice for the company. In only a year, KR has already changed my life!

What are your day to day duties as it pertains to merchandising, etc?
Keaton Row has built an exclusive online catalog for our Stylists to shop and create looks from. I am responsible for selecting the merchandise that goes into the catalog as well as the future brands and retailers that we will decide to partner with. The beauty of Keaton Row is that every Stylist has their own merchandising voice. They are the force that drive our sales, so I am always taking product recommendations and requests!

{a snapshot of what a shoppable look looks like on the site done by my friend and fellow stylist Tracy!}

Where do you get ideas for blog posts?
When I was in charge of our blog, we had just started from scratch and were mainly focusing around our stylists, clients, people who inspire us and fashion trends. So my inspiration came from a variety of places, a mix of real women, aspirational figures in the industry, fasion bloggers and the latest fashion trends! However, currently Allison Daniels (follow her @KRstylist!) is in charge of our blog and social media. She is an extremely talented writer and her creativity and keen fashion sense has taken our blog in a new direction!

Any favorite blog posts you've done we could link to?
Here are two recent posts that we love!

Favorite spring trends you're excited about?
I am loving the explosion of everything Black and White! It is so chic and modern and is the most accesible trend to real women everywhere!

What's your favorite part about working for KR?
Aside from our amazing team, I love how everyday is different and creatively challenging. These past few months have been crazy, exciting and extremely rewarding. Now that we are in our soft launch, it is incredible to see our Stylists working with clients and bringing this vision to life!

Thanks Katie! From now on around here, you'll be seeing a lot of my looks that will be totally shoppable if you sign up with me at Keaton Row! Happy shopping and way to make #mysmartercommerce to the Keaton Row team!

My Partnership with IBM for My Smarter Commerce

Did you think you read that incorrectly? I did when IBM first approached me. I'm not a tech geek or even in the top 1000 blogs on the internets. What would IBM want with me? Once I found out more about their campaign for My Smarter Commerce, though, it made sense. It's all about how smarter commerce affects me and how it affects all of us. So what is Smarter Commerce? Watch this super short video if you want to get a bigger picture about what Smarter Commerce means.

Disclaimer: #spon: I have been invited by IBM to share my honest thoughts and experiences around Smarter Commerce, and as part of this collaboration, IBM may provide me with product, access, content or other forms of remuneration. All opinions are expressly my own.

Pretty cool, right? So what does #MySmarterCommerce mean to me? For the next 30 days, I'll be tracking how technology shapes my life as a freelancer and fashion girl-on-the-go. This might be in Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or on this blog with updates.

Already I can count the ways that I've had #MySmarterCommerce work for me today - reading reviews of an external DVD drive on Bestbuy.com to determine what I purchase, having friends follow me on Good Reads to see what I'm reading and influencing their choices, and using Seamless Web to order my lunch. I also used my Amazon.com app to order a Kindle cover, used Bill.com to get paid by a client, and helped style a client on my styling platform on KeatonRow. And that was just TODAY!

Please follow me and use the #MySmarterCommerce tag if you engage with me! And, tell me in the comments - how do you use your Smarter Commerce? The more we engage, the more we can all help each other out. And you never know - IBM might be listening out for you, too! It really made me realize how much we actually all contribute to each other's commerce, lifestyle, and choices.

Clinton St Baking Co Pancakes // Pretty Things from Cosabella

Pancakes and Lingerie go together like....nothing. But they're two things I'm thinking about this week!

Lingerie. V-day. Blech.
Lingerie. Pretty. Under $35. YES.

Presenting something I just found out about - JCPenney's collab with Cosabella!

Treat yourself!

Did you know it's Pancake Month?? We did here in NY - only because THE BEST PANCAKES EVER are made here at Clinton St Baking Co. Don't believe me? Then try to go by there on a Saturday or Sunday and see if your wait is less than 3 hours. I love their pancakes because they're super cake-like with a gorgeous maple butter. And you can now get the recipes from their excellent cookbook - although I still prefer to go for the experience. Below is the Banana Pancakes Recipe from their book for those of you who can't make it to NY - or don't want to wait 3 hours!

Clinton St Baking Company - Banana Pancakes Recipe via Refinery29

Pancake Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder, plus 1 tsp
¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
6 large eggs, separated
3 cups whole milk
¾ cup (or 12 tbsp) unsalted butter, melted, (plus 2 tsp unmelted for the griddle)
1 tsp vanilla extract

Topping Ingredients:
1 cup flour
½ cup cornstarch
1 tbsp baking powder
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp salt
1 ½ cups seltzer water or club soda
Canola or peanut oil for frying
4 bananas, peeled and halved horizontally
Cinnamon sugar (2 tbsp sugar and 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon)

Pancake Instructions:
1. Measure and sift all the dry ingredients into a large (preferably stainless steel) mixing bowl: flour, baking powder, sugar, salt.

2. In another bowl, whisk together the yolks, milk, melted butter, and vanilla until combined. Whisk the wet mixture into the dry mixture. The result should be slightly lumpy, yet combined to form a batter.

3. Whip the egg whites in a medium mixing bowl until they reach medium peaks (soft in the middle). You can either whip them by hand with a whisk, or put them in the bowl of an electric mixer to whip. Be careful, you don’t want to overwhip the egg whites.

4. Gently mix half of the whipped whites into the batter with a large rubber spatula. Then gently fold the remaining half into the batter. Remember: this batter should be slightly lumpy and have large parts of egg whites not fully incorporated; it should look like whitecaps in the ocean with foam on top. (The batter will last a few hours in the fridge without deflating too much.)

5. Heat a griddle — either an electric griddle, a stovetop griddle, or a big flat pan — to 350 to 375°F. Grease the hot griddle with the remaining butter. Drop a cup (approximately 4 tablespoons) of pancake batter on the griddle and cook to set. When you see bubbles start to form on top, lift the pancake halfway up to see if it’s golden brown and crispy on the edges. If ready, flip the pancake.

6. When the pancake is golden brown on both sides, remove with a spatula. Repeat with the remaining batter and filling, cooking several pancakes at a time.

Topping Instructions:
1. Melt the chocolate, corn syrup, half-and-half, butter, vanilla, chili powder, and cinnamon together in a stainless-steel bowl over a pot filled with warm water on low heat. Mix until smooth. Keep warm until ready to serve.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt with a whisk. Continue whisking as you slowly pour in the seltzer. Set aside.

3. Fill a Dutch oven halfway with oil. Heat the oil to 350°F, checking the temperature with a cooking thermometer. Roll the banana halves in the batter and place them on a dish. With tongs, dip a banana tip into the oil and hold firm until the oil begins to bubble. Gently drop the banana half into the oil. Fry 2 banana halves at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the bananas turn golden brown and crisp. Use a slotted spoon or skimmer to agitate the bananas every 30 seconds so they do not burn on one side. Repeat with the remaining bananas.

4. Place the fried bananas on a paper-towel-lined plate. Slice the bananas on the bias into 1-inch pieces and sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar. Serve the slices on top of the pancakes with the Cinnamon Chili Chocolate Sauce.

Grammy Fashion Superlatives

So the Grammys were last night! Did you watch? I found them kind of bor-ing. The red carpet at The Grammys is usually where really weird stuff comes strutting down the carpet, lest we forget moments like these:

#YIKES! And now I present to you my fashion superlatives for Grammys fashion last night. Hopefully the Oscars won't be as boring as the last 12 awards shows have been...yawn.

Most Irrelevant Guest/Best Color: Karlie Kloss in Michael Kors

I love Karlie, so whatever, but like what are you doing at the Grammys? DON'T YOU KNOW IT'S NYFW?? Perhaps she doesn't follow anyone on Twitter or Instagram.

Second Most Irrelevant Dress/Best Sparkle - Allison Williams in KaufmanFranco

I love me some Kaufman Franco and this just looks effortless, no? As much as I want to hate her, I can't. She's not the one who wore a mesh tank top on TV and made us all watch her.

Best Rock n' Roll - Florence Welch in custom Givenchy

Way to rock it out finally, Flo! Love this use of emerald (pantone color of the year, blah blah we all know). She looks fierce and like she could strangle you with her vocal cords. Love.

Best WTF I Hate You/I Love You Moment - Rihanna in Alaia

I am so down on RiRi these days for a number of reasons, least of all the Chris Brown thing and the fact that her music gives me seizures. But this is stunning. Nobody looks bad in Alaia.

Most Likely to Have Gotten the Date Wrong - Alexa Chung in Valentino

I love Valentino and Alexa doesn't make my skin crawl, but this is the Grammys, not a picnic in France. Regardless, I still love the dress and total look, although she totally looks like July instead of February. Maybe she just came from New York and the Blizzard that was/wasn't and she needed a bit of refreshment.

What did you think of the Grammys and everyone's looks?

What I've Been Up To Lately

Been writing my little butt off for a variety of publications, including Modern Man, Nomad-Chic, Shumacher, and more! As always, you can check out what I've been up to lately at laurenrfinney.com, but here are a few things orbiting in my universe right now:

Friday Night Lights:

O.M.G. Coach Eric Taylor! I am into Season 4 - I'm waaaay in deep to the point where I am having cameos in dreams featuring Tim Riggins and Matt Saracen. #lookingformyowncoachtaylor #helpfmlfnl

Fun fact: Coach Taylor, Kyle Chandler, went to UGA!

Apps to Download:

Vine is a really cool video app that I didn't really see much use for about three weeks ago but after NYFW, I've basically seen every look from every show from every vantage point there is through fashion people's Vine accounts. You can follow me @wtstaishere - will begin posting videos soon once I find some really interesting things to video!

Over is another awesome photography app that I'm currently loving - you can place text over any picture and move it around easily, change fonts, change size, etc. Check out my first #madewithover photo from a trip to Whole Foods last week and download the app so you can make beautiful instagram photos even better!

Book to Read:

Tigers in Red Weather seems like a regular old retro beach read, but the ending is subtly twisted in the best possible way that even I, an avid, voracious reader who has read it all, wasn't expecting. You can follow me on Good Reads, too, to get more book recommendations and ratings from me.

Boots to Wear:

Dav boots, you saved my life this weekend during the blizzard that was/wasn't. Even if there wasn't too much snow on the ground, going through the sidewalks at crosswalks was a pain. For less than $100, you really can't beat better boots!

Introducing The Monocle Order: A Sunglass Insurance Policy

There's a new sunglass shop in town, and it's not like anything you've ever seen before. Behold: The Monocle Order. I asked Zoe Nightingale, CEO at Monocle Order, a few questions and she quite nicely obliged. Read on to find out how "hurricanes like us" now have an insurance policy against expensive sunnies! Bonus: sunglasses double as eye-protectors in this INSANE cold.

Zoe! Tell me about Monocle Order. It's such an interesting concept!

We launched The Monocle Order in June 2011. It started like most companies, over many glasses of red wine. My co-founder, Alex, was lamenting that he had lost his latest pair of 400 dollar designer sunglasses and suddenly it occurred to us that there should be a company that provided an insurance policy for hurricanes like us, who destroy everything in their wake.  We wanted to come up with a way to reward true sunglass aficionados as well as create a secret society to celebrate wanton excessive love of eyewear. So, we found the best independent designers from around the world, who create original designs using only the best materials. We wanted to show people that instead of buying a pair of 300 dollar branded fashion glasses that you could pay less for a handmade gorgeous piece of wearable art - whose lens would actually protect your eyes.

Sounds awesome. So who do you carry if not the usual branded fashion glasses?
