Meet Pearl, Blanche's new friend. Also an Agora find, also a life-long keeper!!

I heart her.

Happy Halloween!

Besides being The Weekend of The Fall (Gator fans, get out), it's Halloween! I've already celebrated the Day of the Dead by watching Mexican folk dancers at the Met. To get you in a spooky mood for tonight, I have a list of some of the most haunted places (besides Transylvania) in the world. Been to any?

ALCATRAZ, San Francisco
- As a child, I was terrified of this place, especially because of an ill-timed viewing of "The Rock" right before our trip.

AOKIGAHARA FOREST, Japan

BANNERMAN'S ISLAND, New York

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, South Africa

CATACOMBS, Paris

EDINBURGH CASTLE, Scotland
- Visited on an especially gloomy Scottish day and was sufficiently scared.

GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD, Pennsylvania

HIGHGATE CEMETERY, London
-A vampire allegedly haunts this place!

LALAURIE HOUSE, New Orleans
-The title of The Most Haunted House in New Orleans must mean it's incredibly frightening.

LIER SYKEHAUS, Norway
- An abandoned mental hospital where they performed lobotomies, it's not open to the public. Um, that's scary.

ROSE HALL PLANTATION, Jamaica

THE TOWER OF LONDON, London
-Been here probably half a dozen times, each on a glum day, which is spooky enough for me.

WHALEY HOUSE, San Diego

Why I Love: Sachin and Babi for Ankasa

In one of my very first posts, I introduced you to Sachin and Babi, the husband and wife design duo behind Ankasa, the lovely home line with a little bit of uptown and eastern mixed together. They also have a clothing and accessories line that I have been a fan of for quite a while and want to share with you: Sachin and Babi for Ankasa. Below are images from their resort presentation. I have met both of the designers and they are not only creative and gracious, but they really know what a modern, comfortable woman wants, at a comfortable price. Check it out!

I know it's a little late....

...but as I troll around looking for the best stuff to bring you, I can't help but notice how many images come via the old Domino website. Truly sad stuff. Below, my celebration of what I considered the greatest shelter magazine, even if I couldn't afford half the goods. Enjoy, and RIP Domino! To check out the newest mag on the stand (actually, it's online only, and I'm appalled/fascinated) go here.

One Potato, Two Potato, Three Potato, Sweet Potato

from Alton Brown comes a great recipe for sweet potato waffles. Enjoy any time of day.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups peeled and cubed sweet potatoes
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 6 egg whites, at room temperature
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange rind
  • Vegetable spray, for waffle iron
  • Special equipment: steamer basket and waffle iron

Directions

Put cubed sweet potatoes in a steamer basket. Place the basket in a large pot of simmering water that is no closer than 2 inches from the bottom of steamer. Allow potatoes to steam for 20 minutes of until fork tender. Mash cooked potatoes and set aside.

In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt and set aside.

In another bowl combine the sweet potatoes, milk, brown sugar, butter, and grated orange rind. Stir the sweet potato mixture into the flour mixture and thoroughly combine. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Gradually fold egg whites into batter 1/3 at a time. The batter will be thick. Using a No. 20 disher (scoop), place 2 scoops of batter onto a preheated, oiled waffle iron, and cook until lightly browned, about 5 to 6 minutes.

Shake It

Polaroid Art! Very urban chic. I especially like Rita Konig's set up in the last image. There was immense backlash when Polaroid, invented in 1929, said they'd stop making their film last year, and due to sites like Save Polaroid, they're going to be coming back. A favorite of old-school fashion editors, the Polaroid camera helped forge an American identity for many. Have a Mac? Mess around with Poladroid. You can adjust the exposure and print out your "Polaroids" to make your own Polaroid art.

How unbelievable are these hardback books from Penguin? The classics are all included, from Oliver Twist to Great Expectations to Crime & Punishment, these beautiful bound books would look great in anyone's library. Or, start a library just so you can have these and the Rubin Toledo books! Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble for around $20. Christmas is coming up....kiss!

I Suddenly Like Venice

Venice: I could take it or leave it. I had an immediate problem with San Marco and the pigeons, and had overall a crappy time while there for 24 hours, but this spread in Italian Vogue is making me like Venice a whole lot more. Bellisima!Image and video hosting by TinyPic
