Yesterday I paraded a friend all over the far West Village on a mission to get a glimpse of the new Jane Hotel, now open. It is actually a restored hotel first built in 1908, which operated as a hotel for sailors. Rooms are from $79, which definitely piqued my curiosity, and now I know why - the rooms are meant to look like cabins (meaning you can touch both walls whenyougolikethis) and the bathrooms are beautiful, but communal. Survivors of the Titanic actually stayed here when they arrived back on firm soil, and it's hosted a whole slew of artsy, bohemian types since. If you are coming to the city to visit, say, moi, it might not be a bad idea - under $100 is virtually impossible in NYC, especially in such a posh area. No worries if the shtick isn't really for you - the lobby bar's if that isn't really your scene - the lobby bar is spacious enough to find Colonel Mustard with the candlestick lurking somewhere in the corner.
