Please remove your shoes…and your dignity

airplane After last week’s airport debacle, these thoughts:

Sometimes I think I’m the only one  our age who remembers when getting on an airplane was a dressy affair. We always had to be dressed appropriately as children in three places: church, Phipps Plaza, and the airport.  Wear a suit or dress on the plane now and people think that you’re on a stodgy business trip, uptight, or unfashionable.  On the other end of the spectrum are those that show up in their Juicy velour sweats, Uggs, and little dog in Vuitton in tow.

But it doesn’t have to be an either/or – there is a happy medium. To be stylish and be efficient at the airport is a tricky thing, but I want to share with you a few tips to making your airport experience less painful.

TIPS TO MAKE THE AIRPORT ANNOYANCE MINIMAL:

*Dress in loose-fitting clothing, as things tend to swell once up in the air. I prefer leggings and a long cashmere cardigan, but well-fitting jeans and a blazer would also be a great option.

*Try to wear footwear without laces, or ones that you can easily pull on and off. For winter, I prefer boots  and for summer, Keds. Anything that requires socks is better – because I know I'm not the only one that has a problem with foot-to-floor contact in the security area.

*Scarves are no longer just for Europeans and celebrities – they’ve hit the mainstream and span the spectrum. Large cashmere or blended scarves will keep you warm if the plane’s temperature drops.

*Ditch the sunglasses. No one cares who you are. You just look like you’re trying to hard otherwise! People will stare for the wrong reasons.

*Use a bag  and wallet with plenty of compartments and one that snaps or zips. There is nothing more frustrating than hopelessly searching for your boarding pass and other travel documents in a bottomless bag or disorganized wallet.

My favorite, the Comme des Garcons wallet (loooove mine!), which at $250 is super pricey, but it’s well worth it. Every time I have to pull out the half-zip wallet, I am so happy it’s all in order…and pretty.

And below, a few celebs who get it right (finally, a use for all those airport pap shots!)
