Everything Middle School is Coming Up Cool

Ok, so I know that this sounds really strange but I noticed a pattern in what was coming down the runway for SS2010 – middle school. We were one slap bracelet away from full-fledged 8th grade. What do I mean? Knee length leggings, bags with rabbit’s feet, bright surfer colors, graffiti prints – and braids. And thankfully, I don’t mean Nicole Richie/Lauren Conrad braids, but long  and pretty plaids.

Tips for getting a bangin’ braid:

Dirty hair always works better than clean hair. Day old hair is preferable. If you can’t go that long, put something in your hair like a volumizer or texturizer to give it some hold.

Start your braid either above or below the ear depending on how long your hair is. The models from the runway are able to start theirs lower because they have long, luxurious hair; the celebs start theirs higher to get a dressier effect. Add a pompadour like Rachel if you want to go for all-out glam.

You can either braid fishtail or regular and do it kind of tightly, stopping about 2-3 inches from the bottom, depending on how long and thick your hair is. Mine is on the thin side – if I braid too low, it gets to be embarrassingly small.

Now, go back and yank the hair at your ears to the front and gently pull apart the braid. if you have layers, do this carefully. You might want to spray the little flyaway ends in, or leave them out if that’s the look you’re going for.

Take some bobby pins and pin back areas that might fall and bother you – the messier the better. Pair it with either a glamorous gown or jeans and a tee and you’re ready!
